Did your laptop stop working and you just weren’t sure if you wanted to repair it or buy a new one? This isn’t the first time it’s happened, and you’re not sure if pouring money into an aging machine is a good option. A new computer would be nice, but is that the smartest decision? Would you be better off fixing your current computer, or is it really time to buy a new one? There’s no clear-cut answer to these questions, but we can show you several sides of the issue to help you make a more informed decision. Buying a used computer or tablet is one alternative to fixing your existing one, but it might come with its own set of challenges.
The Costs of Wear and Tear
Even if you’ve taken good care of your computer, some-high priced repairs are unavoidable, sometimes due to excessive wear or time itself. LCD screens crack (accidents happen), dc power jacks, charging ports and keyboards wear or stop working. Items such as batteries, hard drives and cooling fans will eventually need to be replaced. It’s around this time that people decide what they’ll do with their old computer.
Arguments for Fixing Instead of Buying New
Buying a new computer may not be right for you, for budgetary or other reasons. It is almost always less expensive to repair a computer than buy a new one. Although something as severe as a cracked LCD screen will run $100 – $200 to replace in our shop, such repairs still don’t cost as much as buying a new computer. Repairing a broken charging port would cost less to fix.
Buying a New Computer
Most new laptop, desktop and tablets will cost more than it would to repair the current computer. Just keep in mind that another computer could come with its own set of issues. Finally, if you still decide to buy a new computer, consider repairing the old one to hand-me down to your kids or someone else that may have a need for it.
You know your needs and your computer’s history better than anyone else, so use our tips as a guide, not gospel. Buying a new computer might seem like the easy way out of a high repair bill, but depending on your circumstances, it may not be the best financial decision.
